Repair service

CV Joint & Boot Repair

Inspection and service of inner and outer CV joints and the protective boots that retain grease and exclude contamination.

Manufacturer specifications apply. This page explains concepts only. Torque values, clearances, preload, backlash ranges and procedures vary by axle model and must come from the vehicle or component manufacturer's service information. This directory does not publish repair specifications.

What this service covers

CV joints are packed with special grease and sealed by rubber or thermoplastic boots. The boot is the weak point: if it splits, grease escapes and road grit and water get in, and the joint wears quickly.

Boot and joint service means replacing the boot, cleaning and inspecting the joint, repacking it with the grease supplied for that joint, and refitting the clamps correctly.

Common signs

  • Visible splits or cracks in the pleated boot
  • Grease spray around the wheel well or on suspension parts
  • Early clicking in tight turns

What the work usually involves

  • Inspect inner and outer boots on each shaft during routine service
  • Disassemble the joint where the design allows, clean and inspect for wear and pitting
  • Repack with the specified grease quantity and type, fit the new boot and clamps
  • Replace the joint or shaft instead if the joint is worn

Steps vary by vehicle and component design. Values and procedures come from the manufacturer's service information.

Vehicles this applies to

Any vehicle with CV joints: most cars, crossovers and SUVs, and many 4x4 pickups with independent front suspension.

Key terms

CV joint articulation

The range of angles through which a constant-velocity joint can work while transmitting smooth, constant speed. Outer joints allow larger angles for steering; inner (plunge) joints also allow the shaft length to change as the suspension moves.

Choosing a shop

  • Confirm the shop works on your vehicle class and, for trucks, your axle make.
  • Ask what parts they install (new, remanufactured or rebuilt) and what warranty applies.
  • Check the listing's verification status and date in this directory.
